"Clean telecoms" consists of corporate initiatives and technology innovations in the telecoms sector that are aimed at reducing energy consumption and focusing on alternative energy solutions for powering networks. Both mobile carriers and equipment vendors have been making efforts at reducing the carbon footprint across their own enterprises. The global economic slowdown has helped the clean telecoms sector as carriers aim to reduce their operating costs, a large component of which are spent on powering base station equipment. The equipment vendors have accelerated their development efforts and R&D on green base station equipment and alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power.
