Get The ReportAlthough less than 5% of container terminals are currently automated, there have been plans put in place in major ports to speed up the automation process. There are benefits as well as drawbacks to ramped-up automation efforts and the rate of automation will vary on several factors including their size.
Growth in automation initiatives in container terminals between 1990 and 2010 was linear, but during the last decade, it has been exponential. Despite the robust technological push towards universal automation, a small decline can be observed in 2017, which may lead to a somewhat more moderate growth until 2030. Chart Two shows the evolution of the number of automated container terminals from their appearance in the 1990s till the present.
