The growing propensity for governments to employ a smart document, at a 5.1% CAGR of
shipments between 2022 and 2027, sits alongside increasing adoption of biometrics in ID
programs, in many cases with biometric data held within the chip in the card. As it relates to
remote online verification, this migration to smart documents only supports what is a rapidly
growing market. With digitalization of physical credentials, furthering eGovernment services is a
natural concurrent step, increasing potential implementations. While legacy documents can be
used within online remote verification, smart documents enable security at a higher level, with
chip information able to be read directly by Near Field Communication (NFC) in some instances.
