According to ABI Research’s findings, the United States leads in terms of Large Language Model (LLM) production, with China at a close, but formidable second place.

The United States and China also lead in terms of AI startup funding, likely due to their mature tech ecosystems, high level of government support, and emphasis on Research and Development (R&D), which have nurtured a rich variety of local companies.

The two countries are home to multiple big tech firms that have invested in foundational AI, such as Google and Microsoft in the United States, and Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent in China.

The United States accounted for 55% of total AI hardware/software investment in 2023, followed by China at 35%.
