The chart above shows the estimated use (through penetration rates) of the various cryptographic formats (classical-only, hybrid, and PQC-only). ABI Research has a more conservative view of expected adoption than current government and agency recommendations. The reality is that the transition will be a lengthy and complex process, with classical cryptography unlikely to be phased out completely, persisting well beyond 2040, alongside the use of hybrid schemes. There will be faster movers in critical markets for the use of PQC-only, but a long tail of the many disparate systems and applications that make up Information and Communication Technology (ICT) today will effectively survive well and beyond disuse dates.
