In terms of frequency support, many chipsets will continue to support only L1. ABI Research estimates that 1.28 billion L1-only Location-Based Services (LBS) GNSS chipsets shipped in 2021, a number that will grow to 1.45 billion by 2026 at a CAGR of 3.9%. As additional frequencies become available and multi-frequency chipsets become more compelling in terms of price and efficiency, expect more mass-market devices to move away from single-frequency solutions in pursuit of better performance. The systems remaining on L1 only will heavily prioritize power efficiency and cost above positioning performance, which aligns with many of the rapidly growing use cases for GNSS, such as the IoT and personal trackers. Multi-frequency solutions exist as a product differentiator and marketing point now and moving forward, with market share growing, especially among flagship smartphones and smart premium watches.
