Industrial enterprises worldwide will generate a total of 4.4 Zettabytes (ZB) of data by 2030 (up from 1.9 Petabytes in 2023 at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 11.1%). The lion’s share of data is expected in discrete manufacturing (2.7 ZB by 2030) followed by automotive (1.3 ZB) and process manufacturing (0.5 ZB).

METHODOLOGY

ABI Research has adopted a detailed bottom-up approach to forecast the amount of data generated in automotive manufacturing, discrete manufacturing, and process manufacturing. This methodology has involved several key steps to ensure a comprehensive and accurate forecast.

ABI Research has identified and gathered data on the number of manufacturing sites for each industry, including all relevant factories, production lines, and facilities. These sites have been classified based on size, production capacity, and technological sophistication to create a robust dataset.

Research determined the key use cases that are most data-intensive for each industry. In automotive manufacturing, these include predictive maintenance, quality control and inspection, and the use of Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and robotics. For discrete manufacturing, the focus was on inventory and supply chain management, Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), and real-time monitoring and control. In process manufacturing, the primary use cases identified are process optimization and control, environmental monitoring and compliance, and asset performance management.
